Inequality, unemployment and contemporary Europe. / [in:] International Labour Review

by Sen, Amartya.

Edition: Vol. 136 No. 2 (Summer)Publisher: 1997Description: 17 p.Online Access: Journal article International Labour Review - Wiley Brotherhood staff see Library for further information Notes: Article in International Labour Review, Vol. 136 (1997), No. 2 (Summer)Summary: Inequality of incomes can differ substantially from inequality in other 'spaces' such as well-being, freedom, health, longevity, and quality of life. Given the massive sclae of unemployment in contemporary European economies, concentrating only on income inequality can be particularly deceptive for studying economic inequality, since unemployment causes deprivation in many other ways as well. This paper examines the different ways in which unemployment creates deprivation (other than through low income), and what implications these issues have on the relative merits of American and European attitudes respectively to individual responsibility and social commitment.Availability: Items available for loan: Brotherhood of St Laurence (1).

The dynamics of welfare participation among women who experienced teenage motherhood in Australia . /

by Jeon, Sung-Hee | University of Melbourne. Melbourne Institute of Applied conomic and Social Research | Kalb, Guyonne | Vu, Ha.

Publisher: Parkville, Vic. Melbourne Institute of Applied Economic and Social Research 2008Description: PDF.Online Access: Electronic copy Notes: INTO AND OUT OF WORK SCHOOL TO WORKSummary: "This study examines whether the factors that determine the welfare participation of women who experienced teenage motherhood differ from the factors that determine the welfare participation of women who had their first child at an older age. We examine these factors across the lifetimes of both groups of women. A dynamic random effects probit model is applied to investigate the extent of state dependence in welfare participation while allowing for observed and unobserved individual heterogeneity. We find evidence of state dependence for all women, but it is stronger for women who experienced teenage childbearing than for women who had a child at an older age. In addition, poor health is an important factor in increasing the probability of the welfare participation of women who experienced teenage childbearing." -- MIAESR.Availability: Items available for loan: Brotherhood of St Laurence (1).
