Exploring leadership in vocational education and training /

by European Centre for the Development of Vocational Training.

Publisher: Luxembourg Publications Office of the European Union 2011Description: PDF.Other title: European Centre for the Development of Vocational Training..Online Access: Electronic copy Notes: Cat. No: TI-BA-11-003-EN-N doi:10.2801/36572 Includes bibliographical referencesSummary: European policy on vocational education and training (VET) makes a strong link between the quality of education and the quality of teachers and trainers. Teaching staff are important stakeholders in implementing current VET reforms, and their training and professional development are crucial elements in ensuring quality. However, this working paper argues that the role of those managing and leading VET institutions must be more widely acknowledged and that the research base and policy initiatives specifically related to such staff ought to be strengthened. There is increasing evidence of the importance of leadership in education, though VET leaders have, so far, received only marginal attention. Leaders are crucial in implementing reforms and policy initiatives; they also serve as catalysts for change. The close links between VET and the labour market create specific opportunities for leadership but this has not yet been subjected to European research. This working paper presents some initial findings on leadership in VET in Europe. Cedefop's main objective for this paper is to raise awareness of VET leadership, introducing the topic and escorting it onto the European policy agenda. As the scope and depth of this paper is limited, it should be seen as an initial contribution to discussing leadership in VET.Availability: (1)

How and why has teacher quality changed in Australia ? /

by Leigh, Andrew | Ryan, Chris.

Publisher: Canberra, A.C.T. Australian National University. Centre for Economic Policy Research 2006Description: PDF.Notes: URL: 'http://econrsss.anu.edu.au/~aleigh/pdf/TrendsTeacherQuality.pdf' Checked: 22/04/2009 2:30:12 PM Status: Live Details: HTTP status 200 - Usual success responseSummary: Research suggests that differences in teacher performance can explain a much of student achievement. Little is known about how the quality of the Australian teaching profession has changed over time. These researchers compare those who have entered the teaching profession in Australia over the past two decades and find that the aptitude of new teachers has fallen considerably and conclude that both the fall in average teacher pay, and the rise in pay differentials in non-teaching occupations are responsible for the decline in the academic aptitude of new teachers over the past two decades.Availability: Items available for loan: Brotherhood of St Laurence (1).

Second languages and Australian schooling /

by Bianco, Joseph Lo.

Publisher: Camberwell, Vic. Australian Council for Educational Research 2009Description: PDF.Online Access: Electronic copy Summary: The case for increased second language learning in Australia is better grounded in the personal benefits to individual learners than in arguments about economic and social benefits according to this review of research. ; The review traces the history of language learning in Australia, outlines the findings of research from Australia and overseas and proposes a new rationale for language learning policy and a major improvement in the quality of language teaching across the nation. Joseph Lo Bianco argues that, while the single most important variable in second language education is the quality of language teachers, at times the quality of language teaching in Australia has been too low.Availability: Items available for loan: Brotherhood of St Laurence (1).
