We have chosen to research this area because of the high rates of youth unemployment in Australia. As of June 2011, young people aged between 15 and 24 years were experiencing an unemployment rate of 11.0 per cent, significantly higher than that of the broader Australian community (4.9 per cent). Our report seeks to assess whether the JSA program is currently meeting the needs of young people in Australia. The report confirms the importance of all generalist and specialised youth JSA service providers adopting best practices when working with young people seeking employment. In addition, the report recommends that the JSA program provides greater recognition of social or non-vocational outcomes achieved by JSA providers for vulnerable young people and that the JSA program encourage JSA providers to adopt an integrated, flexible and highly individualised approach when working with vulnerable young people.Availability: Items available for loan: Brotherhood of St Laurence (1).

But how well does a student's achievement in a test predict their later success in life? This study examines this question, with 'success' considered to encompass satisfaction with life together with the extent to which young people are fully occupied with education, employment or a combination of these. Low performers in mathematics in the 2003 Programme for International Student Assessment were the focus. The study found that 'low performing' status has little impact on future success. Further, students who saw the value of mathematics for their future success were more likely to achieve this success.Availability: (1)

Using the 1995 cohort of the Longitudinal Surveys of Australian Youth, this study looks at the role post-school qualifications play in the year-by-year movement between labour market states by young people. We proceed in two steps. First, we estimate labour market trajectories in a multi-spell duration model that incorporates lagged duration and lagged occurrence dependence. Second, in a simulation we find that (fe)male school-leavers accepting a short-lived job are, within two years, 13.4 (9.5) percentage points more likely to find a long-lasting job than in the counterfactual in which they reject short-lived jobs.Availability: (1)
