The rights of the child : the experience of children living in the Australian community awaiting a decision from the Minister for Immigration / by Hotham Mission Asylum Seeker Project. Publisher: Melbourne, Vic. Hotham Mission Asylum Seeker Project 2010Description: PDF.Online Access: Electronic copy Summary: Hotham Mission Asylum Seeker Project commissioned this independent, qualitative study of the human rights situation of children living in the community while the Minister for Immigration considers their parents' application for leave to remain in Australia. In-depth interviews revealed severe material deprivation in participating families which had an adverse impact on a range of human rights set forth in the Convention on the Rights of the Child. Most parents lacked the income necessary to feed and house their children to the standards required by international law, while also restricting their children?s access to healthcare and normal childhood leisure activities. At the same time, the children's rights to education and to freedom of religion and culture were found to be in large measure fulfilled.Availability:

Who cares? Refugee and migrant young people with caring responsibilities : background paper / by Ethnic Communities' Council of Victoria. Publisher: Melbourne, Vic. Ethnic Communities' Council of Victoria 2010Description: PDF.Online Access: Electronic copy Summary: This background paper is developed to first, raise awareness of the concept of informal caring amongst youth in refugee and migrant communities; second, highlight the challenges affecting young people with caring responsibilities when accessing services and third, engender a discussion with people working with or advocating for young people from refugee and migrant backgrounds on how services should respond to these challenges. The paper aims to raise awareness of the limitations evident in the development of policies and support services for young carers from refugee and migrant backgrounds and their families. These limitations are a result of an absence of data on the characteristics of young carers from refugee and migrant backgrounds, their caring responsibilities, the services and support required by them and their families, and the barriers they face when seeking help. Therefore, the aim of this paper is to highlight the importance of addressing this gap, propose 'signposts' for further research and policy development, and generate discussion in this area.Availability:
