The future of work /

by Jackson, Sue | Brotherhood of St Laurence.

Online Access: DOWNLOAD PDF Summary: The way in which we organise, distribute, value and reward work is fundamental to the way we live and the kind of society we fashion for ourselves. It is crucial in determining circumstances for ourselves and our families. Work determines our material well being, opportunities for meaningful social interaction and our health and emotional well being. In broad terms it determines our quality of life. Work generates particular patterns of social and economic power, of inclusion and exclusion, of privilege and disadvantage. In short, our approach to work is important in determining whether we have a fair, inclusive and cohesive society, as compared to one which is dramatically polarised between winners and losers. In Australia, as in other advanced industrialised nations, fundamental social, technological and economic changes are having a major impact on the organisation and distribution of work. The role of VET in preventing the scarring effect of youth joblessness /

by Buddelmeyer, Hielke | National Centre for Vocational Education Research | H rault, Nicolas.

Publisher: Adelaide, S.A. National Centre for Vocational Education Research 2010Description: PDF.Online Access: Electronic copy Notes: Bibliography p. 33 INTO AND OUT OF WORK SCHOOL TO WORKSummary: Youth unemployment, particularly long-term unemployment, is always a concern given the economic and social ramifications that it brings. Using data from the Longitudinal Surveys of Australian Youth, this report looks at the extent to which a previous spell of unemployment determines current unemployment. If unemployment can be attributed to an earlier period of unemployment, we describe that earlier spell as having a 'scarring effect'. The report also examines the extent to which post-school educational qualifications can reduce the scarring effect of unemployment. Scarring does occur but its effect quickly diminishes over time. Post-school qualifications are found to help reduce this effect.Availability: (1)
