Life's not meant to be impossible : an ARC report on the need for a government emergency aid program and a guaranteed minimum income scheme. / by Benjamin, Joan (ed.) | Action and Resource Centre. Publisher: Fitzroy, Vic. ARC 1977Description: 40 p.Online Access: DOWNLOAD PDF Notes: ARC started in 1972 at the Brotherhood of St Laurence as The Family Centre Project. Action and Resource Centre (ARC) for low-income families opened in 1972 on a self-management basis, taking over from the Family Centre and continuing the Family Centre Project philosophy - 'low-income people need a voice and an organisation where they can help other low income people'. With 95 member families, fifteen members of the Family Centre were employed as resource workers. The ARC's Support Work Program (SWOP) provided employment for men who had been out of work for some time. The formal agreement between the BSL and the Action & Resource Centre was signed on 28 July 1976, the first step towards autonomy for the project.(BSL timeline)Availability: Items available for loan: Brotherhood of St Laurence (1). Public economics in action : the basic income/flat tax proposal. / by Atkinson, A. B. (Anthony (Tony) Barnes). Publisher: 1997 Oxford Description: xiii, 169 p. : ill.Notes: The Lindahl Lectures..cover. 'This book contains a substantially revised version of the Lindahl Lectures given at the University of Uppsala in April 1989'..preface.Summary: This book surveys recent developments in public economics by studying the proposals for a basic income/flat tax scheme. It discusses various approaches to taxation and presents a framework for a system which would affect both personal income and the social security system, replacing the one by a flat-rate income tax and the other by a guaranteed income. The idea has generated wide interest in a number of countries, and is being actively discussed by a number of political groups. This book explains how these changes would benefit a wide variety of social groups, but asks how a single reform can meet the very different objectives of different supporters.Availability: Items available for loan: Brotherhood of St Laurence (1).
