Assessing the quality of linking migrant settlement records to census data /

by Wright, Jeffrey | Australian Bureau of Statistics. Analytical Services Branch | Bishop, Glenys | Ayre, Tim.

Publisher: Melbourne, Vic.Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) catalogue no. 1351.0.55.027 2009Description: HTML.Other title: Migrants quality study.Online Access: Electronic copy Notes: Research PaperSummary: As part of the Australian Bureau of Statistics' Census Data Enhancement project, the Migrants Quality Study was conducted to assess the feasibility of linking the Department of Immigration and Citizenship's Settlement Database (SDB) to the Statistical Longitudinal Census Dataset (SLCD), without the use of name and address as linking variables. This paper provides some background to the Migrants Quality Study, a brief description of the linking process, a thorough evaluation of the quality of the linked data, and then associated discussion about the usefulness of the linked data. ; The results from this quality study indicate that linking the SDB to the SLCD is feasible and can produce useful information that no other data source currently provides. However, some quality issues have been identified and need to be thoroughly understood to ensure that the linked data is correctly interpreted and appropriately used.Availability: (1)

Australia's immigration revolution /

by Markus, Andrew | Jupp, James | McDonald, Peter.

Publisher: Crows Nest, N.S.W. Allen & Unwin 2009Description: xix, 172 p.Summary: In 2006 Australia's population was 20.7 million. It is projected to reach 23 million in 2014. What is driving this rapid population growth, and how is the Rudd government dealing with immigration at a time of recession? The diversification of the immigration intake over the last 50 years, from the British Isles to Europe and Asia, is widely recognised. But there is less understanding of the development of Australia's temporary program, which since 2000 is the major component of the immigration intake. Similarly, the development of the global labour market and the impact of this on immigrants have not entered Australian consciousness. The lack of attention to these developments stands in marked contrast to the heated controversies sparked by the arrival by boat of small numbers of asylum seekers. Written by three leading researchers, with its analysis located in historical and international contexts, Australia's Immigration Revolution explains developments of national importance - including ground breaking explorations of ethnic concentration and public opinion.Availability: Items available for loan: Brotherhood of St Laurence (1).
