Publisher: Fitzroy, Vic G.T. Sambell Memorial Trust 1987Description: 18 p. PDF.Online Access: DOWNLOAD PDF Notes: "Occasional Paper — G.T. Sambell Memorial Trust — 1987"- Front Cover Delivered on 29th November 1987 on the 57th Foundation Festival of the Brotherhood of St Laurence .Summary: In addition to being a tribute to one who had a profound influence on the writer’s own life, this 7th G. T. Sambell Oration tries to make a modest contribution to the Church’s understanding of housing, by examining some fundamental theological and social underpinnings. During the International Year of Shelter for the Homeless, the Victorian Council of Churches was funded by the Federal Government to assist the churches in-becoming more involved in seeking solutions to Australia’s housing problems. As Chairman of the National Committee of Non-Government Organisations, charged with promoting the Year, the writer has had a unique opportunity of studying and wrestling with the complex issue of national housing policy. Educating for justice : a conversation with the church about its life and Gospel / the third G.T. Sambell Memorial Oration delivered by The Revd Dr Denham Grierson

by Grierson, Denham.

Publisher: Fitzroy, Vic Companions of St Laurence 1983Description: 12 p. PDF.Online Access: DOWNLOAD PDF Notes: "Occasional Paper — Companions of St Laurence — 1983"- Front Cover Delivered on 4th December, 1983 at the 53rd Foundation Festival of the Brotherhood of St LaurenceSummary: Ideas about education and justice are commonplace. Agreement, however, on how these words are to be defined or on what these words imply is not easily reached. That is why the phrase “educating for justice” is so forbidding. It assumes so many things. Firstly that there is a common understanding of the word justice. Secondly that there is a common agreement about the notion of educating and what is meant when the word educating is brought into conjunction with the word justice. It is also unclear who are to be educated and by whom for it cannot be the case that the process of educating for justice does not raise that critical question. But the biggest assumption is that if one has a goal of achieving justice it can be successfully attained by educating people into just living and just action. It is this last assumption that is the most problematic of all.Availability: Items available for loan: Brotherhood of St Laurence (1).

God, people and resources : a Christian comment on the values of Australian society / the Second G. T. Sambell Memorial Oration delivered by The Right Reverend Oliver Heyward, M.A.

by Heyward, Oliver | Brotherhood of St Laurence.

Publisher: Fitzroy, Vic. Companions of St Laurence 1982Description: 11 p PDF.Online Access: DOWNLOAD PDF Notes: "Occasional Paper — Companions of St Laurence — 1982"- Front Cover Delivered on 5 December 1982 at the 52nd Foundation Festival of the Brotherhood of St LaurenceSummary: During the past 10 years there has been a significant change in the values of Australian society. This has probably been caused by a complex mix of events which include the long period of economic boom which ended in the mid-seventies. With that came big advances in technology, producing a confidence in the capacity of human beings not only to manage their own affairs, but to control the world in which we live. This coincided with a period in which the Church lost confidence in its message and ceased to speak with certainty as increasing numbers of people felt that they had no need of belief in God.Availability: Items available for loan: Brotherhood of St Laurence (3).
