"Lucky St George" or "Knowing what it is" : Christianity and the current crisis / The Nineth G.T. Sambell Memorial Oration delivered by Dr Veronica Brady

by Brady, Veronica | Brotherhood of St Laurence.

Publisher: Fitzroy, vic G.T. Sambell Memorial Trust 1989Description: 12 p. PDF.Other title: Lucky St George or Knowing what it is : Christianity and the current crisis.Online Access: DOWNLOAD PDF Notes: "Occasional Paper - Companions of St Laurence - 1989" - Front cover Delivered on 3rd December, 1989 at the 59th Foundation Festival of the Brotherhood of St LaurenceSummary: I wrote this lecture during the pilots’ strike and wrote it in Western Australia which was at that time a State of crisis as charge and counter-charge flew and every day brought some yet more extraordinary revelation of relations between Government and business. To say this, however, is not mere anecdote, a way of beginning. Rather, it is our beginning. It poses our question and defines our task. For the crisis issue is not just West Australian, it is Australian and perhaps also, more generally, Western. But our concern is at the moment with Australia. Mindful of one of Blake’s wisest sayings, “to generalise is to be an idiot”, let us focus, however, on a very specific issue: the fate of that Christian commitment to justice which was exemplified in Geoffrey Sambell whom we honour this evening.Availability: Items available for loan: Brotherhood of St Laurence (2).

Grand beliefs - radical responses / The thirteenth Sambell Memorial Oration deliver by The Right Reverend Michael B Challen

by Challen, Michael B | Brotherhood of St Laurence.

Publisher: Fitzroy, Vic. The G.T. Sambell Memorial Trust 1994Description: 20 p. PDF.Online Access: DOWNLOAD PDF Notes: "Occasional Paper - Companions of St Laurence - 1994" - Front cover Delivered on 19 August 1994 at St Peter's Eastern Hill, Melbourne.Summary: Through this 13 th oration, and the third devoted to the place of employment, my purpose is to hold up some teachings of the Church and consider what practical implications they have for the Church as it engages with our contemporary society, which continues to experience various social and economic stresses. I wonder what Geoffrey would thunder forth now in response to the level of unemployment being not a mere 2 per cent (so-called frictional unemployment) but rather 10 per cent, which most economists attribute to both the outcome of the ‘normal business cycle’ and also of the basic structural changes taking place in the economies of all OECD countries, as well as some factors arising from our own situation.Availability: Items available for loan: Brotherhood of St Laurence (1).

Sambell Memorial Trust — 1986"- Front Cover Delivered on 7th December, 1986 at the 56th Foundation Festival of the Brotherhood of St Laurence Summary: The focus of any oration to honour the life and ministry of Geoffrey Sambell surely must be on the theme the Gospel and Society. In this talk I Wish to, explore with you how the local Church within certain limits can assist individual Christians to participate meaningfully and hopefully „ within the frustrations and compromises of public involvement. The assumption behind this presentation is that the local Church attracts and conditions people more on the basis of the images and experiences it promotes through its structures and activities rather than by its explicit teaching.Availability: Items available for loan: Brotherhood of St Laurence (1).
