Brotherhood of St Laurence and Centre for Public Policy, University of Melbourne 2005Description: 15 p.Other title: Social policy working paper ; no. 5.Online Access: Electronic copy Notes: Includes bibliographical references (p. 13-15) June 2005 This paper is developed from a presentation at a symposium `Ending poverty and promoting social inclusion', hosted by the Brotherhood of St Laurence, University of Melbourne Centre for Public Policy in December 2003.Summary: Alison McClelland traces the changes in understandings of poverty, and responses to it, in the services, research and advocacy undertaken by the Brotherhood of St Laurence from the 1930s to the start of the 21st century. She argues that two enduring features of the Brotherhood s approach have been the recognition of the structural dimension of poverty and the related need to address poverty by preventive social action rather than only by remedial attention; but she also notes variations over the years, for example in the emphasis on individual agency and empowerment.Availability: Items available for loan: Brotherhood of St Laurence (1).

Life chances at 16 : life chances study stage 8

by Taylor, Janet | Brotherhood of St Laurence | Nelms, Lucy.

Publisher: Fitzroy, Vic. Brotherhood of St Laurence 2008Description: vi, 45 p. PDF.Online Access: DOWNLOAD PDF Summary: Stage 8 of the longitudinal Life Chances Study explored the situations of 125 young Australians (75 girls and 50 boys) from diverse backgrounds, their current engagement with school and work and their future plans at the age of 16. The survey responses confirmed the continuity and layering of disadvantage: for example, 16 year olds from low-income families with parents with limited education are more likely than their affluent peers to leave school early and less likely to plan university careers. The findings also showed diversity within socioeconomic groups, and posed the challenge of providing effective teaching and transition supports for all young people.Availability: Items available for loan: Brotherhood of St Laurence (1), BSL Archives (1).
