The Short Break Stay program was established to offer people with advanced dementia a three-day stay in a homelike setting attended by staff especially trained to communicate closely with their carers and thereby replicate preferences and established home routines. This study found that this innovative response to carer needs, designed and delivered by Brotherhood Retirement and Ageing Services with financial support from the Commonwealth Respite Centre, provided real support and reassurance for carers and care recipients alike.
