This participatory action research project explored the intersection of domestic and family violence and settlement in Australia, focusing on three refugee communities Afghan, Sierra Leonean and Sri Lankan Tamil in the first five years of settlement in Australia. The project identified risk factors of family violence for refugee women and their families during their first five years of settlement in Australia and developed a series of recommendations in consultation with refugee women and service providers. The project utilised the social capital of the refugee sector and bilingual workers were trained to engage with the refugee communities to conduct these consultations. Both women and men attended in large numbers, solutions were identified by the communities and were presented in a discussion forum.
