People with a mental illness are amongst the most vulnerable and marginalised people in society due to their mental illness. Often they live in poverty on a limited Centrelink income and are faced with additional expenses. They experience social exclusion; being excluded from education, employment and housing as well as financial exclusion. At the same time they may have the burden of low self-esteem and impaired judgement due to their mental illness. Being in receipt of a government income and having a long-term illness or disability are the strongest predictors of debt.
