Jesuit priest, human rights lawyer and academic Frank Brennan considers what is the appropriate place of personal beliefs in Australian public life in elections, in parliament, in the courts. He concludes that since the church and the state are demonstrably no longer independent realms, there is a need to set right the parameters for religious participation in public life. He argues for the importance of individual conscience in the performance of public duties.
