"Occasional paper Brotherhood of St Laurence 1998" - Front cover Paper delivered on Thursday 13 August 1998 Delivered at State Film Theatre 1 Macarthur St, East Melbourne
The 1998 Sambell Oration was delivered by Fred Argy, author of Australia at the Crossroads and one of Australia’s leading economists. Fred Argy is no stranger to the needs of practical decisionmaking. As a public servant he was secretary to the Campbell Inquiry into the Australian financial system; Australia’s ambassador to the OECD; director of the Economic Planning Advisory Council, and a senior Treasury adviser. Believing that economic policy should be about improving our society, Fred Argy argues that the issue for Australia is not whether we should be trying to improve economic efficiency through structural reform, but how we can do this with acceptable employment and social outcomes.
