This paper describes the Brotherhood of St Laurence's year-long study of fifty low income families' income and expenditure patterns. It presents the major findings of the study's first six months of data collection, July-December 1985. These findings describe the families' expenditure priorities and the effects on adults and children of not having enough money to meet their needs. Second Australian Family Research Conference held at the University of Melbourne from 26-28 November 1986.
